Things to do Thursday: Online Magazines on RB Digital

Moonee Valley Libraries now has access to the full range of magazines offered online by RB Digital. This means even if you don’t consider yourself to be much of a magazine reader there’s there’s likely something you’d enjoy. For library members they are free to read on your own smart phone, computer or tablet.

For history enthusiasts there are 92 history titles to explore from around the World. English language history titles include National Geographic History, American History from the USA, All About History, Archaeology and various BBC history titles such as History Magazine, World Histories and History Revealed from the UK, and from Australia there is Traces (formerly Inside History).

Recent issues are brimming with great reads. Traces has articles on Paul Brickhill (the Melbourne-born author of the Great Escape and the Dam Busters), Australia’s oldest synagogue (in Hobart, and celebrating its 175th anniversary this year), and a how-to on finding the burial locations of your ancestors. BBC’s History Magazine meanwhile, has articles that cover topics as varied as why Donald Trump’s presidency is unprecedented, the history of the Freemasons, and, the globalisation of the potato!

There’s also magazines focussing on family history. These are perfect for keeping updated on the latest resources available online for family history research. Try Family Tree Magazine from the USA or Who do you think you are? from the UK. Also, Australia’s Traces, while not devoted exclusively to family history content, will keep you updated on the latest Australian developments in the family history area.

There’s also a wealth of historical special issues on a huge range of topics: from Ancient Rome and Vikings, to submarines and spies. These are designed to be highly visual and absorbing – making them great options for history buffs young and old looking for something different to read during lockdown. Plus they’d be perfect for researching school projects.

Finally, while this blog is devoted to history, RB Digital covers much more: 3435 magazines (at last check) in various languages. There’s magazines on motorbikes, men’s health, music and much more: crafts, gardening, pets, celebrities and gossip, sports, parenting and current affairs… the list could go on. Plus RB Digital has eBooks and eAudiobooks as well.

Lockdown is tough for book-deprived readers. Hopefully the many magazines, ebooks and audiobooks our library members can access for free from RB Digital will help.

Our library members can set up a free account to use RB Digital, and the RB Digital app can be downloaded, for free, for use on smart phones and tablets. If you need any help call the library on 8325 1900 between 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday.
