Family History Group and Family History Afternoon

We're starting a Family History Group based at Sam Merrifield Library in Moonee Ponds.

Come along for a family history themed afternoon, including the first meeting of the new group, on Tuesday 12th August.

Plus, there will also be a session on Researching Scottish Family History running from 2-3pm, so you can make it a whole afternoon of family history.

Historic Homes of Essendon "Mar Lodge"

"Mar Lodge" was built in 1860 and was originally the residence of James Robertson, a wealthy pastoralist who used it as his hunting lodge and later owned by his son Francis Robertson. In 1888 the McCracken Brothers purchased "Mar Lodge" and it became a gathering place for the parties and dinners for the colony's elite. By 1919 the entire estate was sold to the Todd family however by 1929 the entire property was sold and on the 18th November, 1929 the Mar Lodge Estate was officially created, with 316 allotments available from 90 pounds.

Malakoff Castle, Maribyrnong

Malakoff Castle was built in 1846 by Mr Joseph Raleigh and was a well known landmark which stood on the summit of the Maribyrnong hill overlooking the Saltwater River now called the Maribyrnong River. The building initially was used as a shepherd's lookout by the owner of a station property which surrounded Maribyrnong. In shape it resembled a castle-like appearance with a tower and a weather-vane, the tower was built in the late 1840's or early 1850's and was built of bluestone from the quarries nearby. The building was demolished in the 1920s.

Notable Buildings of Moonee Valley

" NGARVENO", 71-73 Ngarveno Street, Moonee Ponds. The home "Ngarveno" was formerly owned by John Davies, who was the Member of Parliament for North Melbourne and Chairman of the Bench at the Moonee Ponds Court House. He died in 1901 aged 82 years. The Ngarveno Estate, established in 1862, originally extended from the Moonee Ponds Creek to Mount Alexander Road, and from Dean Street to Ormond Road. Davies established vineyards that covered 16 acres and was renowned for its wine. The name of the house was chosen by Davies because of its position facing towards the east, overlooking the Moonee Ponds Creek, it must have been flooded with light as the day dawned, so Davies gave it the aboriginal term for "rising sun" or "sunnyside"- 'Ngarveno". The original "Ngarveno" is a lovely old house with spacious verandahs on three sides. It is of bluestone with a stucco surface. Its style is plain - the most ornate feature being slender woode...
