Interesting street names

Have you ever noticed than in this area there are quite a few thematic clusters of street names? Moonee Ponds has lots of literary street names, such as Byron Street, Kipling Street and Dickens Street, as well as streets named both Capulet and Montague. While closer to Essendon Airport you can find several aviation themed street names, including Wirraway Road, Nomad Road and Dehavilland Avenue - all of which are named after aircraft.

Want to know the origins of the name of your street? Or learn a little about the history of the street? A fascinating and useful book from our collection, that we use very regularly, is Street Names of Essendon, published by the Essendon Historical Society.

As the name implies this book details the history of street names in the areas around Essendon, Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale and Strathmore. But it also tells us more: such as when each street first appears in directories, which gives an idea of when the street was created, and the history of name changes. For example, did you realise that Bulla Road was once known as Deep Creek Road?
